BACKGROUND

The Giant Magellan Telescope is the most powerful ground-based telescope ever engineered. It was designed to push the boundaries of human knowledge and discover the unknown. With unmatched image quality, seven of the world’s largest mirrors will launch our view into the universe to uncover the cosmic mysteries of dark matter, investigate the origins of chemical elements, and search for signs of life on distant exoplanets for the first time.

The 30-meter class telescope is under construction at Las Campanas Observatory in Chile’s Atacama Desert, one of the best locations on Earth to view the heavens. From this unrivaled vantage into the southern sky, the Giant Magellan Telescope will produce the sharpest and most detailed images ever taken of our universe, ten times greater than the famed Hubble Space Telescope and four times the James Webb Space Telescope.

When complete in the late 2020s, the Giant Magellan Telescope will be the largest public-private funded science project in history. The endeavor was founded by an international consortium of leading universities and research institutions representing five countries, and is managed by the GMTO Corporation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Pasadena, California. JOB SUMMARY

The GMTO Corporation is seeking a dynamic leader to oversee the Giant Magellan Telescope’s education and community engagement strategies for all student and public learning initiatives.

The Education and Outreach Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing education, public outreach, and NSF (National Science Foundation) broader impacts programs. This includes overseeing new and innovative K-12 curriculum programs and field trips, public outreach events, grants, budgets, trainings, and program reporting.

The Education and Outreach Manager has a unique opportunity to build GMTO’s EPO (Education and Public Outreach) program from the ground up. The position will be tasked with executing an exciting pilot project utilizing the latest digital technologies to connect with students and underserved communities in the United States and Chile who may not have the opportunity to visit an observatory, planetarium/science museum, or learn about astronomy. The goal is to inspire students to pursue careers in science and engineering by making learning science and engineering fun.

The Education and Outreach Manager will be tasked with managing GMTO’s education and public outreach activities and will be the in-house science curriculum expert, with an emphasis on inclusive education and public engagement to actively promote diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in STEM

The Education and Outreach Manager reports to the Director of Communications and Outreach. This position will work closely with the Director of External Relations in Chile and with the partners of the U.S. Extremely Large Telescope Program (US-ELTP), focusing on novel broader impacts initiatives with the National Science Foundation (NSF), both for existing and proposed grant awards.

The position requires excellent communications and social skills with all age groups across a diverse set of communities and the ability to establish positive working relationships with external partners. The candidate will have strong initiative, motivation, organization skills, and the ability to balance multiple priorities under limited supervision.

JOB DUTIES

Primary duties and responsibilities include:

Education and Public Outreach

  • Develop the strategy for an integrated education and public outreach policy and plan consistent with applicable NSF policies and grant award requirements
  • Plan education and public outreach activities in alignment with the strategic objectives of GMTO and the US-ELTP, in partnership with scientists and the local community
  • Oversee all EPO initiatives and programs, leveraging the expertise and resources of GMTO Founder institutions, this includes formal and informal education, teacher trainings, and public outreach programs and events
  • Manage vendors and contractors to achieve EPO initiatives and goals
  • Utilize the latest digital technologies and best practices in formal education and public outreach, focusing on delivering active learning and gamified experiences
  • Establish strong relationships with K-12 school districts and science education facilities/programs to disseminate broader impact activities that benefit society
  • Support various NSF proposals and grants

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI)

  • Plan and execute a strategic plan on how GMTO can better support, develop, and promote diversity, equity and inclusion within the astronomy and astrophysics community
  • Ensure all broader impact programs and initiatives promote DEI in STEM and within the GMTO Corporation

Budget and Reporting

  • Manage external reviews and assessments of all education and public outreach programs, broader impacts, and DEI initiatives; report status to the Director of Communications and Outreach and other relevant parties
  • Education and public outreach budget development and reporting on grant-funded activities in compliance with funding agency requirements
  • Manage payments, subscriptions, invoices, due dates for education and public outreach project related expenses

ESSENTIAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field of study (Education, Sciences, etc.)
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience providing dynamic group facilitation and training curriculum for K-12 learners promoting STEM
  • Minimum of 5 years of developing science education curriculum both formal and informal
  • Experience in STEM education and public outreach, and engagement with underserved communities
  • Ability to manage vendors and contractors performing key EPO services
  • Proven record of public outreach event and conference management
  • Knowledge of digital teaching technologies, remote learning technologies, active learning, and best practices
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage conflicting priorities and deadlines
  • Strong communication skills; written, verbal, and presentation/facilitation skills
  • Experience with program planning, curriculum design, facilitation, training delivery, and instructional design
  • Competency in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
