Scientific Instruments Are the Superpowers of the Giant Magellan Telescope
The instruments allow astronomers to unlock the secrets of the universe by dissecting light into spectra and providing detailed chemical analyses of celestial objects and their origins. The Giant Magellan Telescope can accommodate up to ten instruments, more than any other telescope. Each one has a unique ability to explore the unknown: from analyzing a distant planet’s atmosphere in search of life to looking back in time to when the universe first formed. The discoveries they make could rewrite history as we know it.
Explore the Instruments
Large Earth FinderThe Large Earth Finder will measure the masses of Earth-like planets outside of our solar system and search for biosignatures, such as oxygen, in their atmospheres. Discover More
Multi-Object SpectrographThe Multi-Object Spectrograph is perfect for studying galaxy evolution, the intergalactic medium, the birth and death of stars, gravitational waves, and taking redshift surveys. Discover More
Integral-Field SpectrographThe Integral-Field Spectrograph will target the physics of galaxy assembly and the complex molecular soup of galaxy evolution, including blackholes and the reionization of the universe. Discover More
